| Description | ||||
| This coming August 15, 1998 is an especially auspicious date. It matks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Government of the Republic of Korea, and also of the founding of the Republic of Korea. The Republic of Korea was established based on free democracy on August 15, 1948, 38 years after the Great Han Empire, and three years after Korea was liberated from Japanese imperialist rule. The last state of the Choson Dynasty, lost its sovereinty to Japan in 1910.
Over the past half century, the Korean people have overcome much adversity and have achieved remarkable economic growth. Korea was once regarded as a hopeless backwater, but its rise stunned the world. Hard times have revisited Korea yet again, however, the Korean people must join hands to surmount an ongoing national ecomonic crisis and demonstrate once more their ability to rebound from adversity for five more decades of vigorous growth. A variety of gala events and performances will be held to celebrate Korea's founding. Among them, there will be the "Internatonal Symposium in Commemoration of 50 years of the Republic of Korea", a Korean classical opera featuring the life of Kim Ku, a prominent nationalist leader, the "National Flag Celebration Drive", and a running tour of the national flag around the country. Sharing in the joy of this meaningful occasion, the Ministry of Information and Communication is issuing a new commemorative stamp and holding the "98 Korea Philately Exhibition". |
