| Description | ||||
| The "1998 Korea Philately Exhibition" is being held at the Korea Industrial Design Promotion Center from August 19 through August 24, 1998. It marks the 50th anniversary of the Republic of Korea. The Ministry of Information and Communication is issuing a commemorative stamp for the exhibition (the Special Philatelic Week Stamp), and has designated the six-day exhibition period as Philatelic Week.
The stamp will feature a painting of "Grapes", by Lady Shin Saimdang (1504-1551). Of her many works, this work is among the most widely known paintings of grapes. Her painting depicts a vertically suspended grapevine in the center, and grape clusters in all tints of black. They are rendered in such a supremely realistic manner that the vine seems to take on a life of its own, tempting onlookers to try plucking a grape from it, themselves. Some 350 philatelic works will be on display at the Korea Philately Exhibition, affording visitors a valuable opportunity to survey the development of philately in Korea and throughout the world at a glance. Enthusiasts will be able to take daily classes on stamp-collecting and see films on past issues of stamp series, and the beautiful landscape of Korea on large screen televisions. There will also be an autograph session with renowned postage stamp designers and popular cartoonists. We fully expect that this summer's stamp exhibition will be a pleasant and rewarding experience for everyone. |
